It became their biggest hit since Between the Sheets.Ĭome My Way was originally recorded as an album track by Rene & Angela. You know it must be love when you give a song as good as Smooth Sailin' Tonight to your boyfriend rather than recording it yourself. It takes a good woman to make his "nature" rise? First time I've ever heard it called that. Rudy's background vocals provides a strong counter-point on It Takes a Good Woman. But the heart of this record is the quiet storm love songs (both mid-tempo and ballads) that follow. The album starts with two synth-driven dance floor tracks, Everything Is Alright and Dish It Out. Her sweet vocals lent a new element to the Isleys' usual three part harmonies. She wrote (or co-wrote) seven of the eight songs and she played all variety of keyboards and synthesizers on the record. The multi-talented Winbush arranged and co-produced Smooth Sailin'. Which brings me to the album's one glaring weak spot, Brother to Brother. But when it comes to the rest, the lyrics have such a generic quality that they provide no surprises once you've read the song titles. I really like the powerful funk of Do It Right.
